Why we donate to Wikipedia
Wikipedia is an online crowd-sourced encycolpedia - for those of you old enough image editing the pages of an Encarta 93 CDROM!
Here at DigiEnable, we use Wikipedia a lot - crowd sourced ideas, facts and figures, backed up by cited sources and pretty much a page on anything you could possibly think to Google... that's why we've donated to the Wikimedia Foundation (the non-profit that runs Wikipedia founded by Jimmy Wales).
Wikipedia (/ˌwɪkɪˈpiːdiə/ (listen), /ˌwɪkiˈpiːdiə/ (listen) WIK-ih-PEE-dee-ə) is a multilingual, web-based, free encyclopedia based on a model of openly editable and viewable content, a wiki. It is the largest and most popular general reference work on the World Wide Web, and is one of the most popular websites by Alexa rank. It is owned and supported by the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization that operates on money it receives from donors.
What does Wikipedia spend it's money on?
Well, if you ran one of the top 10 websites in the world, what would you spend your money on?
Most liekly the answer will be computers/bandwith/websites and people... and that's pretty much what Wikipedia do too.
Any dontation, whatever size would help towards keeping this invaluable resource up and running for years to come. If you can't afford to donate the reddies, you can also donate your time as they are always looking for editors... especially anyone from diverse backgrounds or langauges.
We've been donating to Wiki for the past two years and will continue to do so, we hope you do too!Back To List
